Jobs/Roles in the ECE Community: Internationally

The first international organization that I chose was United Nation’s Children’s Fund (UNICEF). This organization has helped millions of children and families around the world. Their focuses include Child Survival and Development, Basic Education and Gender Equality, HIV/Aids and Children, Child Protection, Policy Advocacy and Partnerships. Their Early Childhood Education and Readiness stance helped me to realize that all children, wherever in the world, all need the same opportunities to succeed in school and in life (United Nations Children’s Fund, n.d.).

I was able to find temporary assignments and consultancy assignments through the provided links.  The varieties of assignments can be found in many places and for all types of positions working to ensure the best interest of children.

The second organization I chose was Save the Children. This organization is similar to UNICEF’s focuses and missions but they also have “Sponsor a Child” which includes supporting a child through monetary donations so they are able to attend school and have the proper nutrition and housing for their development (Save the Children, 2011).

There was a couple of positions in the United States that ranged from an Early Childhood Coordinator to an Early Childhood Development Specialist that required a Master’s degree and experience in early childhood education.  One position was in Needles, California and the other was in Washington D.C.

The third organization that I chose was the International Step By Step Association. This organization connects professionals and organizations in early childhood development and education.  They are interested in the youngest of children, to families, to educators. It was established in the Netherlands in 1999 and has a network across the world. There are books, tool kits, conferences, membership of different levels, and other pertinent information for anyone who is involved in the early childhood profession (International Step By Step Association, n.d.).

I was not able to find any job opportunity here which was disappointing.

  1. Dear Lori,
I think that it would be neat to find an opportunity to go to the Netherlands. Some of my family originated from there. I would like to visit and explore their early childhood programs. You explored some great organizations I think that I might explore the International Step by Step organization. It sounds interesting and a great resource.

  2. Thank you for sharing about Save the Children, I actually went to their website to find jobs in California to work with this organization.
I find that most of the international agencies focus on helping children better their lives to help change their future. I hope that all of us as early childhood professionals want to achieve these things for all children.

  3. It was very interesting reading about the international Step-byStep organisation. I understand your frustration with not being able to find positions in your area. Although their are jobs available that I would love, they are not im my area and uprooting my family is not an option. Many of the things I would have to start here on my own if I wanted to do them.

  4. Lori,
Were you surprised that there were no careers easily made available through these organizations. I think it may have to do with the need for these organizations to be very selective in their choices due to the many variances and need to closely look at applicants backgrounds.
    What are your thoughts?

I think each of these organizations do great things in the name of children and families.

    1. Hi Millie,
I think you are right. These organizations have to be very careful on hiring because of the work they do around the world. The last thing they want is a scandal to affect the credibility of their organization.

  5. Lori-Save the Children is one I completely forgot about and it has been around for awhile I believe. Looking at positions internationally, were you intrigued enough to want to move away or is more of just a thought and something you would necessarily see yourself doing?

    1. Hi Amber,
I think it would depend on the position but I am not sure I could do it. I would like to believe that an opportunity like that would be a chance in a lifetime. I would probably have to go alone because I don't think I could get my husband to go with me!
How about you? Would you do it?

  6. I like that UNICEF focuses on a variety of children's needs. HIV/AIDS prevention and gender equality are very important in improving the quality of children's lives all over the world.
    Thanks for sharing!

  7. I am so glad to learn about an organization that puts emphasis on literacy internationally. I am a advocate for any programs of literacy.
